Miguel López de Legazpi sailed from New Spain in 1564 under orders from Viceroy Velasco, tasked with establishing a permanent Spanish presence in the Philippine archipelago after earlier expeditions had failed to return westward across the Pacific. He founded Manila in 1571, roughly a year before his death, and the city he established would remain under Spanish administration for over three centuries.
This coin was part of the FNMT's ongoing "History of Spain" commemorative series.
