This piece belongs to Spain's long-running commemorative series celebrating the historical kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula. Granada holds a particular significance in that series: it was the last Nasrid emirate to fall to the Catholic Monarchs, surrendering on January 2, 1492 — the same year Columbus sailed under Castilian commission. The timing was not coincidental; Ferdinand and Isabella needed the southern frontier secured before committing resources westward.
The treaty terms at Granada's capitulation were unusually generous, guaranteeing religious freedom to the Muslim population. Those guarantees were revoked within a decade.
