| Aanvullende informatie |
The International Polar Year of 2007–2008 was a coordinated global research initiative involving over 60 nations — the fourth such event in history, following those of 1882, 1932, and 1957. Spain issued this coin in direct conjunction with its participation in IPY research programs, particularly Antarctic fieldwork conducted through the Spanish National Research Council. The timing mattered: 2007 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the International Geophysical Year, which had itself produced the Antarctic Treaty of 1959.
The .925 fineness places it in Spain's standard commemorative silver program of the period, struck at the Madrid facility on Calle Jorge Juan.
