Issued as part of Spain's ongoing commemorative series marking the bicentennial of the 1812 Constitution of Cádiz — the so-called "La Pepa," promulgated on March 19, Saint Joseph's Day — this piece addresses the liberal political movement that produced one of the most radical constitutional documents in early 19th-century European history. The Cádiz Cortes drafted it while much of mainland Spain was under Napoleonic occupation, an extraordinary circumstance that shaped its unusually progressive character for the period.
The 1812 constitution was abolished and restored multiple times before finally being superseded in 1837.
