Jordi Farragut Mesquida was born in Ciutadella, Menorca in 1755 and emigrated to North America, where he fought for the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War before later serving in the nascent United States Navy. He is better remembered today as the father of Admiral David Farragut, the Union naval commander famous for the 1864 Battle of Mobile Bay — but the elder Farragut's own career was genuinely distinguished. Spain's periodic commemorative program targeting figures of Menorcan or Spanish origin who shaped foreign history makes this issue part of a coherent, if loosely defined, series.
The KM#1598 assignment places it within the Royal Mint's 2025 commemorative output, a program that has grown substantially in scope since the early 2000s.
