This piece belongs to the Monnaie de Paris "Valeurs de la République" series, which used historical French figures to anchor an explicitly civic message during a period when France was processing consecutive terrorist attacks in 2015. Joan of Arc's inclusion was not without friction — her image had been aggressively co-opted by the Front National for decades, making a state-issued coin bearing her likeness a minor political act in itself.
