This piece belongs to Gaultier's "Régions gourmandes" series commissioned by the Monnaie de Paris, in which the designer — better known for corsets and sailor stripes than coin work — contributed a set of regional French food-themed issues. The Alsace entry nods to choucroute and Kougelhopf territory, rendered in Gaultier's characteristically irreverent graphic idiom. The .333 fineness places it firmly in billon territory, too silver-poor to attract bullion interest but enough to justify the collector premium over face value.
