Jessenius — Jan Jesenský in Slovak — performed the first public autopsy in Central Europe in Prague in 1600, dissecting the body of a executed criminal before an audience of students and city officials. It was a landmark moment in the medical history of the region. He later became rector of Prague University, a position that put him directly in the path of the Bohemian Revolt: after the Battle of White Mountain in 1620, he was arrested, convicted of treason, and executed with particular brutality — his tongue cut out before beheading, his body quartered.
