The International Year of Biodiversity was declared by the United Nations for 2010, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the Convention on Biological Diversity's Strategic Plan — a deadline by which signatory nations had largely failed to meet agreed biodiversity targets. Greece issued this coin as part of a broader wave of commemorative silver released by eurozone members that year, each independently marking the UN designation. The Greek economy was simultaneously entering its sovereign debt crisis; the Bank of Greece suspended most non-essential operations shortly after, making later issues in comparable series considerably scarcer.
