Reverse description The reverse presents an allegorical composition centered on a globe rendered in low relief, around which a graceful female figure is depicted in a flowing pose, her arms extended amid flowering branches and botanical elements, symbolizing the harmony of life on Earth. Surrounding the central design are various representations of biodiversity including snails, flowers, wheat ears, and foliage, arranged in a rich naturalistic tableau filling the field. The Greek legend 'ΔΙΕΘΝΕΣ ΕΤΟΣ ΒΙΟΠΟΙΚΙΛΟΤΗΤΑΣ' (INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF BIODIVERSITY) curves along the upper portion of the rim, with the date '2010' integrated into the inscription. The scalloped edge of the coin is visible at the periphery, consistent with the Spanish flower shape of the flan.

Additional information

The International Year of Biodiversity was declared by the United Nations for 2010, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the Convention on Biological Diversity's Strategic Plan — a deadline by which signatory nations had largely failed to meet agreed biodiversity targets. Greece issued this coin as part of a broader wave of commemorative silver released by eurozone members that year, each independently marking the UN designation. The Greek economy was simultaneously entering its sovereign debt crisis; the Bank of Greece suspended most non-essential operations shortly after, making later issues in comparable series considerably scarcer.
