Beschrijving keerzijde A formal frontal effigy of King Hugues Capet occupies the central field, depicted crowned and robed in medieval royal vestments consistent with early Capetian iconographic conventions. The portrait is rendered in a hieratic, symmetrical style evoking the formal portraiture of medieval manuscript illumination and royal seals. The legend 'HUGUES CAPET' arcs around the upper portion of the field, identifying the monarch, while the date '2012' and the privy marks of the Monnaie de Paris appear in the lower surrounding field.

Aanvullende informatie

Issued as part of the Monnaie de Paris "Grandes Heures de l'Histoire de France" series, this coin commemorates Hugues Capet, elected king by the Frankish nobility in 987 AD following the death of Louis V — the last Carolingian. His election effectively ended a dynasty that traced its legitimacy directly to Charlemagne, replacing hereditary succession with an elective monarchy that the Capetians themselves would later quietly convert back into a dynastic principle.

The Capetian line Hugues founded lasted, in various branches, until 1848.
