Issued to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the Channel Tunnel rail link, this coin marks the pairing of Paris's Gare du Nord and London's St Pancras — the two termini connected by Eurostar service since 1994. The Franco-British joint issue concept had political weight: the tunnel itself was the product of a 1986 treaty signed by Thatcher and Mitterrand, two leaders whose mutual antagonism was barely concealed throughout negotiations.
St Pancras had nearly been demolished in the 1960s before a conservation campaign — partly galvanized by John Betjeman — saved the Victorian Gothic structure. It wasn't adapted for Eurostar until 2007.
