World Peace Day, observed on January 1st each year, was established by Paul VI in 1968. Francis's theme for the 52nd observance — 2019 — was "Good Politics is at the Service of Peace," a pointed commentary on what he described as a global rise of nationalist populism and the erosion of multilateral institutions.
