Reverse description The central field depicts the scene of the Washing of the Feet, rendered in a stylised relief reminiscent of medieval iconography: a nimbed Christ kneels before a seated disciple, with a basin on the ground between them, while two further figures observe from the right. An arched stone building rises in the background against a sky with clouds, and an olive branch frames the left side of the composition. A dove of peace is shown in the lower field beneath the denomination. The mint mark R appears to the upper left, and the legend CITTA DEL VATICANO arcs along the upper border, with the denomination 10 EURO inscribed across the lower field.

Additional information

World Peace Day, observed on January 1st each year, was established by Paul VI in 1968. Francis's theme for the 52nd observance — 2019 — was "Good Politics is at the Service of Peace," a pointed commentary on what he described as a global rise of nationalist populism and the erosion of multilateral institutions. The Vatican's commemorative program has issued a coin tied to each annual theme since the series began, making the run a surprisingly coherent documentary record of papal political priorities across decades.
