Margarita Salas spent most of her career working in New York under Severo Ochoa before returning to Spain, where her research on the DNA polymerase of bacteriophage φ29 produced one of the most commercially licensed patents in European scientific history. The φ29 polymerase she characterized became foundational to modern DNA amplification techniques still in use in forensic and clinical labs today.
