San Marino's annual silver commemorative program operates under a coinage agreement with the European Union that permits the microstate to issue euro-denominated collector coins despite having no independent central bank. The 2011 output came during a particularly active period for the series, when San Marino was issuing multiple commemorative types per year under that arrangement.
KM#503 is one of the harder dates to source in quantity — not because mintages were catastrophically low, but because San Marino's collector issues were distributed primarily through the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato in Rome, and secondary market dispersal was uneven.
