Issued as part of Greece's ongoing commemorative program honoring ancient cultural figures, this coin marks the 2,500th anniversary of the birth of Euripides — a playwright whose works survived antiquity in unusually high numbers. Of the roughly 90 plays he wrote, 18 complete tragedies remain, more than those of Aeschylus and Sophocles combined, largely because Byzantine scholars selected his works as school texts.
The Bank of Greece commissioned the issue through the Hellenic Mint (IETA) in Athens.
