Jurkovič was the defining figure of Slovak Art Nouveau architecture, and this issue marks the 150th anniversary of his birth. His work at Luhačovice spa and the wooden memorial structures he designed along the Vršič mountain road in the early twentieth century placed him in genuine dialogue with Viennese Secession — though his vocabulary drew more heavily on Moravian folk construction than anything from the Ringstraße.
The National Bank's silver commemorative program for Slovak cultural figures has been running since the early 1990s, and this entry in the series was struck at the Kremnica Mint, which has operated continuously since 1328.
