Dun Karm Psaila, born in 1871, was a Roman Catholic priest who began his literary career writing in Italian before making a deliberate and consequential shift to Maltese — a move that placed him at the center of the early 20th-century movement to establish Maltese as a written literary language. His poem "Lil Malta," later adapted as the national anthem, gave the language a formal cultural weight it had long lacked in official life. Malta only standardized a written orthography for Maltese in 1934.
