| Additional information |
Issued as part of Monnaie de Paris's ongoing "Grands Couturiers" series honoring French fashion houses, this piece commemorates the seventy-fifth anniversary of Christian Dior's founding collection — the "New Look" of 1947, which Carmel Snow of Harper's Bazaar named on the spot at the Avenue Montaigne presentation. That debut so dramatically reversed wartime austerity silhouettes that the U.S. textile lobby briefly lobbied Congress to block imports of the style.
The series itself has attracted serious collector attention outside traditional numismatic circles, complicating secondary market pricing.
