Obverse description The obverse depicts the legendary Viennese street musician Augustin playing his bagpipes while seated in the plague pit into which the dead of the 1679 epidemic were cast. The design illustrates the folk tale in which the inebriated Augustin fell into the pit and survived unharmed. The date 1679, referencing the year of the great plague in Vienna, appears in the field alongside the issue year 2011. The legend REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH and the denomination 10 EURO are inscribed around the design.
