| 裏面の説明 | A schematic map of Europe occupies the central field within a rectangular frame, with the denomination 10 and the word EURO inscribed over the map. Fifteen stylized national flags of the European Union member states radiate outward from the central cartouche, arranged in a sunburst pattern, with additional flag motifs depicted in relief around the entire border of the coin. The word ESSAI appears in the lower field beneath the central rectangle, indicating the piece's trial or pattern status. |

This piece commemorates the 1963 Élysée Treaty, the Franco-German friendship accord signed by de Gaulle and Adenauer that formalized postwar reconciliation between the two countries. The treaty was famously amended by the Bundestag before ratification, which infuriated de Gaulle — he considered the added Atlantic Alliance preamble a direct dilution of the bilateral partnership he had envisioned. Adenauer, by then in the final months of his chancellorship, could do little to prevent it.
France issued commemoratives across multiple materials for this subject; the cupronickel strikes were distributed far more widely than their gold or silver counterparts.
