The "Coin of History" series from the Monnaie de Paris uses selective gold plating and insert technology to embed medieval imagery directly into circulation-adjacent collector pieces — a format the mint has leaned on heavily since the early 2010s. The Templars issue lands on well-trodden ground: the Order was suppressed by Philip IV of France in 1307, its members arrested en masse on a single Friday — the 13th of October — in a coordinated royal operation widely believed to have been motivated as much by the French crown's debts to the Order as by any genuine heresy inquiry.
Jacques de Molay, the last Grand Master, was burned at the stake in Paris in 1314 after retracting his confession.
