| 背面描述 | The reverse reproduces a Renaissance-era commemorative medal honoring Leonardo da Vinci, based on a portrait medal attributed to the early twentieth century. The central field presents a right-facing profile bust of Leonardo da Vinci rendered in classical medal style, with flowing beard and hair characteristic of his iconography. The surrounding legend in Latin, rendered in a period-appropriate epigraphic style, identifies the subject as 'LEONARDVS VINCIVS FLORENTINVS', identifying him as Leonardo of Vinci, of Florence. The overall composition faithfully evokes the tradition of Renaissance humanist portrait medals. |

This piece belongs to Monnaie de Paris's long-running "Coin of History" series, which rotates through figures selected for their association with French cultural heritage — a category that requires some stretching for Leonardo, a Florentine who spent only his final three years on French soil. He arrived in 1516 at the invitation of François I, settled at the Château du Clos Lucé near Amboise, and died there in 1519. The 500th anniversary of that death is precisely why this coin exists.
