| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse portrays a three-quarter bust of Christoffel Plantijn (Christophe Plantin), the celebrated sixteenth-century Flemish printer and publisher, depicted in period costume with a prominent ruff collar and flowing robes. He is shown seated at a compositor's workbench, his hands engaged with typesetting tools, with a printing press frame visible to his left, evoking his revolutionary contribution to early modern typography. In the upper left field, an ornate calligraphic cartouche bears the name 'Christoffel Plantijn' together with the commemorative dates '1520 2020' marking the quincentenary of his birth. The motto 'Labore et constantia' — Plantin's personal device meaning 'By labour and constancy' — is inscribed in period-style script in the upper right field. The composition is rendered in high relief against a deeply mirrored proof field, lending a strongly pictorial and historically evocative character to the design. |
