Obverse description The obverse reproduces Jules-Eugène Lenepveu's celebrated 1872 ceiling painting Les Muses et les heures du jour et de la nuit, rendered in full colour across the coin's field. The composition is presented in a circular format faithful to the original rotunda ceiling of the Palais Garnier. Centrally superimposed upon the coloured artwork is the face value and the legend REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE. The inscription PLAFOND DU PALAIS GARNIER, the artist's name J. E. LENEPVEU, and the date PARIS - 1875 appear within the design.
