The Carthaginian shekel was the dominant military currency in Hispania during the Barcid campaigns of the late 3rd century BC — struck in significant quantities to pay mercenary troops fighting under Hasdrubal Barca, who governed the peninsula after Hamilcar's death in 229 BC and founded Carthago Nova (modern Cartagena) as the Carthaginian administrative capital. The coins that inspired this issue were produced at that mint, making Cartagena the historical throughline between the ancient prototype and the modern issuing authority.
