Additional information

The Cantar de Mio Cid, composed anonymously sometime in the late 12th century, is the oldest surviving complete Castilian epic poem — and its manuscript, copied by a scribe named Per Abbat in 1207, spent centuries in private hands before the Spanish state finally acquired it in 2007, the same year this coin was issued. That acquisition by the Biblioteca Nacional de España was the direct occasion for the mintage.
