Obverse description The obverse bears a facing portrait of French privateer Robert Surcouf in the upper right quadrant of the field, with his name rendered in the legend ROBERT SURCOUFF below the effigy. To the left, a sailing vessel is depicted in profile. The lower portion of the field features a cartographic outline of the region of Brittany, above which the country initials RF (République Française) appear. A decorative scroll along the periphery carries the regional inscription BRETAGNE.
