The Bisontins were a locally issued complementary currency launched in Besançon in 1998, part of a wave of French regional exchange schemes operating outside the formal monetary system during the years just before euro coins and notes entered circulation. Crédit Mutuel Doubs co-issued with the municipality, giving the instrument a degree of institutional credibility unusual for this type of scrip. Vauban — the 17th-century military engineer whose fortifications define Besançon's urban geography — lent his name to this denomination.
Printed by Imedia Europe, a Besançon-based printer, the note never had legal tender status and functioned purely within participating local businesses.
