| Obverse description | Stylized effigy of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands facing left, rendered in a minimalist linear artistic style with fine engraved lines defining the facial features. The name 'Beatrix' appears in a curved legend at the upper portion of the field, while the inscription 'Koningin der Nederlanden' (Queen of the Netherlands) arcs below it in a second curved legend. The portrait is set within a plain, unadorned field, emphasizing the contemporary design aesthetic characteristic of Dutch commemorative coinage of this period. |

Issued to mark the 2004 enlargement of the European Union, when ten new member states acceded on 1 May — the largest single expansion in the bloc's history. The Royal Dutch Mint produced both gold and silver versions of this commemorative, with the gold struck in comparatively small numbers for the collector market.
