| Beschrijving voorzijde | The obverse presents a frieze-like composition divided into two registers: at left, a file of Greek hoplites in full panoply—rendered in the red-figure pottery style of classical antiquity—advances in phalanx formation, while at right, Persian warriors reproduced from bas-reliefs of the Palace of Darius at Persepolis face them. The Hellenic Republic coat of arms occupies the central field, flanked by the confronting armies. The entire design is bordered by a continuous meander (Greek key) ornament, evoking classical architectural decoration. The encircling legend and denomination appear within the meander border. |
