Aurel Stodola, born in Liptovský Mikuláš in 1859, became one of the foremost steam and gas turbine engineers of the early twentieth century, his 1903 textbook on steam turbines remaining a standard reference in engineering faculties for decades. Slovakia issued this coin on the 150th anniversary of his birth. Stodola also pioneered early work in prosthetics, designing and fitting an artificial limb for a patient at his own expense — a detail that tends to surprise those who know him only through thermodynamics literature.
