The Auberge de Provence in Valletta was built in the 1570s for the Knights of the Langue of Provence and ranks among the finest surviving examples of Baroque civic architecture in Malta. It served as the seat of the Grand Prior of Provence and later, under British rule, housed the Union Club before being converted into the National Museum of Archaeology. The 2013 issue is part of Malta's ongoing series commemorating historic auberges of the Knights Hospitaller, each struck in sterling silver with collector audiences firmly in mind — none of these pieces were intended for circulation.
