The Argotti Botanic Gardens in Floriana were established in the mid-18th century under Grand Master Pinto de Fonseca, initially as a private garden for the Knights of St John. The site later became one of Malta's principal horticultural research stations, with the conservatory housing a notable collection of cacti and succulents accumulated over generations of systematic botanical work.
This issue is part of Malta's ongoing silver commemorative program tied to national heritage sites — a series that has grown considerably since the island's 2008 eurozone entry gave the Central Bank a new commemorative framework to develop.
