Part of the Monnaie de Paris' "Régions de France" series, this issue celebrates Aquitaine among a broader set of 26 regional coins released simultaneously in 2012. The series was conceived as a collector program rather than circulating currency, distributed largely through French post offices and the Monnaie de Paris directly. The half-silver alloy — unusual for a French commemorative of this period — kept retail prices accessible while maintaining the appearance of a precious-metal issue.
