Additional information

Van Dyck was Flemish, not Spanish — his inclusion in a Royal Mint of Spain series reflects his years at the Madrid court, where Philip IV appointed him court painter and knighted him in 1633. The king's patronage was so extensive that Van Dyck completed multiple equestrian portraits of the royal family during this period, several of which remain in the Prado.
