Ambras Castle near Innsbruck owes its Renaissance transformation to Archduke Ferdinand II, who rebuilt it from a medieval fortress between 1564 and 1589 to house both his morganatic wife Philippine Welser and his obsessive collecting habit. The Kunst- und Wunderkammer he assembled there is among the oldest intact museum collections in the world, never having been dispersed or relocated — an almost impossible survival record for a Habsburg holding.

This was the second coin in Austria's "Palaces and Castles" series, launched that same year.
