Beschrijving voorzijde At the centre of the coin, a faithful reproduction of the reverse design of the historical 8 Reales of Carlos IV (KM# 432.1, dated 1808) is displayed within a raised circular border: it depicts the Royal Coat of Arms of Castile and León quartered with Granada enté en pointe, and the dynastic fleurs-de-lis of the House of Bourbon in the centre escutcheon. The surrounding annular field bears the issuer name, face value, and year of issue. The mint mark 'M' and assayer initials 'FA', along with the denomination mark '8' and mint letter 'R', are incorporated in the legend, referencing the original colonial mint coinage.

Aanvullende informatie

The original 8 reales — the coin this piece commemorates — was the first globally traded currency, minted continuously from the 1490s through the 19th century and accepted as legal tender in the United States until 1857. Carlos IV's reign (1788–1808) coincided with the peak of Spanish colonial silver output from Potosí and Mexico City, though his rule ended with his forced abdication under Napoleon's pressure at Bayonne.

The Real Casa de la Moneda has issued several reales-themed commemoratives; this 2017 entry in that series reproduces the milled edge and macuquina-era aesthetics that made the original so resistant to clipping fraud.
