Additional information

The Prado's 1819 opening was not the triumphant cultural moment it might appear in retrospect. Ferdinand VII inaugurated it primarily as a royal painting gallery, not a public museum in any meaningful sense — general admission came later, reluctantly. Goya was court painter through some of the institution's most turbulent pre-history, surviving the Napoleonic occupation and two separate Spanish regimes without losing his position, a feat of political dexterity as remarkable as anything he painted.

Spain issued this coin as part of a broader bicentennial program that included multiple denominations and materials. The .999 fine standard places it among the purer silver issues in the commemorative series.
