Additional information

San Marino's uniformed militia companies date to the medieval commune period and remain among the few genuinely active historic guard units in Europe — not ceremonial recreations but continuous institutional survivals. The republic has no standing army in the conventional sense, making these companies the direct structural descendants of the citizen defense force that helped San Marino resist absorption by the Papal States and, later, Napoleonic consolidation efforts.

San Marino's commemorative euro program is administered through a bilateral agreement with the EU, allowing the microstate to issue legal tender despite not being a eurozone member through standard accession.
