At 311 grams of fine silver, this is a kilo-equivalent issue — technically a troy pound — a format Malta has used selectively for prestige collector releases. Melita is the ancient Roman name for Malta, derived from the Phoenician word for shelter or refuge, a reference to the island's harbors that made it strategically vital to every Mediterranean power from Carthage onward.
