| Obverse description | Left-facing effigy of King Juan Carlos I of Spain, rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair and facial features against a mirror-polished proof field. The portrait occupies the central field, unadorned and without regalia. A continuous beaded border frames the design. The circular legend around the periphery reads 'JUAN CARLOS I REY DE ESPAÑA', with the date '2013' positioned in the lower exergue. |

| Reverse description | The reverse depicts the samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga, Japanese ambassador of the Keichō Embassy, shown in prayer before a crucifix, based on the celebrated painting preserved in the Museum of the City of Sendai, Japan. To the left, a decorative cartouche incorporates the national flags of Japan and Spain rendered as a latent image. Above the central scene, a galleon in full sail symbolises the trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic voyage undertaken by the embassy en route to Spain. The surrounding legend commemorates the 400th anniversary of Japan–Spain diplomatic relations, with the denomination and Madrid mint mark also present in the field. |
