Jozef Kroner (1924–1998) remains the towering figure of Slovak cinema, best known internationally for his lead role in Ján Kadár and Elmar Klos's Obchod na korze (1965), which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film — the first Oscar ever received by a Czechoslovak production. Kroner's performance as the conflicted Tono Brtko, a Slovak carpenter complicit in the deportation of a Jewish shopkeeper during the Nazi occupation, is still studied in acting conservatories across Central Europe.
The centenary of his birth prompted this issue.
