The World Day of the Sick was established by John Paul II in 1992, who announced it while already aware of his own Parkinson's diagnosis — a fact he did not disclose publicly until years later. Francis chose Lourdes as the spiritual focus for the 25th observance in 2017, continuing a Marian emphasis that has anchored the day since its founding.
