Pernes-les-Fontaines earned its name from the roughly forty fountains built across the town during the 17th and 18th centuries, fed by channels drawn from the Nesque river. The commune served as the capital of the Comtat Venaissin — the papal enclave in Provence — from 1188 until that role passed to Carpentras in 1320. This coin belongs to the French Regions series issued ahead of euro adoption, one of many bimetallic 10-franc pieces revalued at 10 euros for collector purposes after 1999.
