Fabvier was a French officer who fought under Napoleon, later became a general in the Greek War of Independence, and — unusually for a foreigner — was given command of the reorganized regular Greek army in 1826. He led the failed relief attempt at the Acropolis in 1827, taking a wound in the assault. Greece granted him citizenship, and he eventually returned to France and served in the July Monarchy's military establishment.
This is one of several Greek commemoratives in the ongoing series honoring philhellenes — foreign volunteers whose involvement in the independence struggle has become a recurring subject for the Athens mint.
