When Willem-Alexander ascended in April 2013, Dutch euro coinage required an effigy update — but the "2nd map" reverse had already replaced the original Ravenstein map design across the eurozone in 2007, meaning the Netherlands was simply slotting a new portrait into an established reverse format. The transition from Beatrix's portrait to Willem-Alexander's made the Netherlands one of the few eurozone members to change head of state mid-series, producing a clean generational break in the coinage record without any change in monetary policy or mint authority.
