Beschrijving voorzijde A three-quarter facing effigy of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI occupies the central field, rendered in fine relief. The circumferential legend CITTA DEL VATICANO arcs along the upper periphery, identifying the issuing state, while the date and mint mark appear in the lower field alongside the engravers' initials D.L. and M.C.C. INC. Twelve stars of the European Union encircle the portrait, evoking the broader European monetary union. The design is the work of engravers Daniela Longo and Maria Carmela Colaneri.

Beschrijving keerzijde The standard Euro cent reverse, designed by Luc Luycx, depicts a stylised map of the European Union prior to the 2008 enlargement, representing the fifteen member states of the EU as a unified geographic motif. The face value 10 EURO CENT is inscribed in bold relief to the left of the map. The designer's initials LL appear discreetly in the field. Fine horizontal lines in the background field evoke the European continent, while a globe segment visible to the left and right of the map reinforces the international context of the single currency.

Aanvullende informatie

Benedict XVI's first euro coinage series was struck during an ecclesiastically charged moment — his pontificate had begun just months before the 2006 issues were prepared, following the death of John Paul II in April 2005. Vatican euro coins are legal tender but almost never circulate; annual mintage is tightly capped and sold directly to collectors, making genuine wear essentially nonexistent on any surviving example. The 2007 date is the final year of this "first map" design, as the EU's cartographic revision — incorporating the 2004 accession states into the reverse map — had already been mandated for all eurozone members.
