Cyprus joined the eurozone on 1 January 2008, replacing the pound at a fixed rate of 0.585274 CYP per euro — a conversion locked in by EU Council decision in July 2007. The island had been divided since the Turkish military intervention of 1974, and the euro changeover applied only to the government-controlled south, meaning the currency boundary on the island runs along the UN buffer zone.
