| Obverse description | The obverse features a detailed depiction of an ancient Cypriot sailing vessel — a galley of the type used in the eastern Mediterranean during antiquity — rendered in high relief at the centre of the field, sailing upon stylised waves. The ship is shown with a large square sail and prominent oars. Twelve five-pointed stars of the European Union are arranged around the outer ring.
